I live out of state and needed help for my brother who lives in Knoxville. He has Biploar Disorder and sometimes his symptoms can fluctuate, especially if he stops taking his medication. He can be angry and impulsive, even suicidal. I worried more as he got sicker, because he sounded like he might hurt himself.
I knew I needed help but did not know who to call, as I live in Texas. So I called the Mental Health Association with his story. We then did a tree way call with my brother Stu, and found he was intending to hurt himself. What scared me most was he had a plan and the means to follow through on his threat to hurt himself.
The Mental Health assocaition staff kept Stu on the phone talking while another staff member called 911 to get the police there to intervene. Stu was taken to the hospital to get stabilized and back into treatment. Stu is alive and well because of the Mental Health Association.
